Have you ever wondered what sort of ink can do what? I don't know about you, but sometimes I stand in the ink aisle at my LSS looking for a certain color, but then can't make up my mind as to what formula to get.

Here's a little cheat sheet I made up after I did a bit of research:

VersaMark - usually clear or a light color that disappears. Creates a "watermark" image. Great for embossing. Can be used with chalk b/c it sticks to the ink.

Dye Ink - Dries fast, some are waterproof & archival (check package), not good for embossing, may fade over time

Chalk Ink - My personal favorite. Soft, chalky, matte finish. Dries fast, permanent, not good for embossing. Great for distressing.

Pigment Ink - Vivid colors. Slower drying (so great for embossing), waterproof, available in lots of colors. Doesn't dry on non-porous surfaces.

Brilliance Ink - Metallic, slightly transparent finish, great for embossing, waterproof, dries on vellum. Good on glossy finishes like pictures.

Staz-On - Another favorite of mine! Designed for non-porous surfaces, but works on porous, too. Permanent, only basic colors available. Does require a special cleaner b/c it's solvent-based.

Thank you ... it will be good to have this quick reference. I've been told over and over again the difference among all of these kinds of inks ... but I can't keep it straight in my memory!

Thanks Alissa, I didnt pay attention to the last ink I bought and it was pigment. Needless to say I am use to the FAST DRYING and it was not. It's ok, just got to get use to it :)

Jacquie, if you have a heat gun, you can use that for a second or two to speed dry pigment ink. It works fast! Be sure it's just for a short time and then turn it off or it'll scorch your paper... learned that the hard way, too!

Thx for this Alissa. I'm printing it to keep handy. I had a new stamp & used Staz-on & I couldn't get it off. I had no idea it wouldn't just come off. Thx again.

You're welcome!!! You can find the cleaner at any crafty store that sells the Staz-On inks. It's only maybe $1.99 and it will last a looooooon time.

Alissa, are you using the full size Chalk Ink pads, or the little ones?

Teresa, I use the little ones mostly because they're a lot less expensive so I can collect more colors ;) I do have big ones for the colors I use a lot, though: Chestnut Roan and Charcoal.
